Nathan Larson

Class of 1991:
Nathan Larson earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and a Master’s degree in Geography from UW-Madison. Since 1999, Nathan has worked to grow farm- and garden-based education locally, statewide and nationally. Locally, he co-founded the award-winning Troy Kids’ Garden and the Goodman Youth Farm in collaboration with East High staff and students and other community partners. Nathan has provided educational programs for thousands of students and professional development workshops for hundreds of educators around the country. He is the author of Teaching in Nature’s Classroom, which has reached thousands of educators in every state in the U.S. and over forty countries around the world. He currently leads the Cultivate Health Initiative, a joint project of the Madison nonprofit Community GroundWorks and the Environmental Design Lab at UW-Madison to grow the school garden network and movement in Wisconsin. He is a former Nelson Institute Community Fellow and Honorary Associate in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Nathan is a co-founder of the Wisconsin School Garden Network and the National School Garden Network and he currently serves on the board of directors for the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education.
